So, I am a natural planner and usually quite organized. However, I really procrastinated in getting the whelping area ready and supplies out for Journey’s delivery. Having done this dozens of times, I knew that there would be plenty of time once I saw that labor had begun.
It was Friday mid- afternoon, and Journey was acting uncomfortable and would pant now and then. Dan and I sat down to take a little snooze as it was looking like it might be an “all nighter”. She hopped up on the couch and would press in to me and would pant. Around 3:30 pm I thought I had better start getting some things prepared. So, Dan took Journey on his lap and I went about getting the scale, gloves, the stack of towels, suction bulbs, the scissors and clamps, etc. out and within reach of the whelping box.
Within those few minutes, Dan had put Journey down and started to fall asleep. I came back around the corner and could not believe it, but there was the first puppy entering the world on the living room floor! It was 3:54 pm!
It was a flurry for a few minutes, but we got everything in place and Journey proceeded to deliver all 4 puppies and was done by 6:02 pm! It was fun, it was daylight, and she did it in 2 hours and 6 minutes!
